You're better off buying a throw away phone when in-country and paying for a fixed amount of usage. Then email your contacts that uou temporarily have this new phone number. Often ATT and Verizon sign you up for an international plan, then something gods haywire (you exceed the usage, they don't sign you up correctly, etc) then you get back to the USA and have to deal with their customer service to try to straighten things out (a nightmare). Overbilling can be in the $thousands. Plus there is WiFi all over in Europe for data.
