whenst i used to hang around edwards AFB, once in awhile the base would go quiet and then the/a shuttle would land. in a few days of it sitting there on the end of the tarmac, they would pack it up on this 747 and ship it back to florida.

They would fly low enough over the Tampa Bay area bringing it back to FL that we could see it sitting on the back of the 747. That was cool to see it flying like that. They always said on the news when it would be flying over so people could go out and see it.

I wonder if it changes the flight characteristics of the 747 much?
