I can see how the uneducated can think that atheism is a religion but let me teach you. There is no possible way Atheism can be a religion. Nearly every religion defines itself with a belief and worship of a superhuman ghost daddy normally a God or many Gods. Religion as you put it is a system of beliefs and faith and people that are religious are believers. Disbelief cannot be a type of faith. In fact it's the absence of faith or belief. By no modern religious standard can atheism be called a religion, to do so is just lazy intellectually. It fails in every standard for what makes a religion a religion. It's merely an opinion.

Numerous courts have ruled that atheism is a religion. The Frank R. Wolf International Religious Freedom Act signed into law by Obama also protects atheism under religious freedom laws.
