snippy: The company progressed onto automobiles in 1901 with the Pierce Motorette and later Great Arrow models and branched out into motorcycles in 1907 when they started a separate Pierce Cycle Company, led by Percy Pierce, son of the company’s president. The first motorcycles were offered to the public in 1909, the same year their cars became known as Pierce-Arrows. The Pierce cycle was the first inline four-cylinder motorcycle made in America. The earliest bikes were offered with an inline four-cylinder 688cc engine with a side-valve T-head and direct drive transmission, although two-speed transmissions were added the following year. A single-cylinder model with a 592cc engine was later offered, as well. hemmings.
